Why is my toilet gurgling? Causes and what to do

Updated October 2026

A gurgling toilet means air is being pushed or pulled through its water seal, usually because the drain beyond it is partly blocked or the vent pipe isn't letting air in. If it gurgles when the shower or washing machine drains, or other drains are slow, the shared sewer line is partly blocked and should be cleared before it backs up.

Why toilets gurgle

When water rushes down a drain it creates suction, or negative pressure, behind it. The vent stack, the pipe that rises through the roof, lets air in to balance it. If the vent is blocked, or the drain is partly blocked so water backs up and pushes air ahead of it, that air bubbles through the water sitting in the toilet's trap. That's the gurgle.

What the gurgle tells you

  • Only after its own flush: a partial blockage in the toilet or just past it.
  • When the shower, bath or washing machine drains: the shared line is partly blocked, or the venting is poor.
  • With the water level dropping in the bowl: water is being siphoned out, often a vent problem.
  • With slow drains or a sewage smell: the main sewer line, often tree roots in older clay pipes.

What you can check yourself

  • Plunge the toilet with a flange plunger.
  • Run each fixture in turn and note which ones make the toilet gurgle.
  • Look at the overflow gully outside. If it's wet or full, stop using water and book.
  • Don't climb onto the roof to check the vent. A plumber can check it safely.

Why it shouldn't wait

A gurgle is often the first sign of a sewer blockage building up, especially from tree roots. Caught early, it's a standard sewer clear that typically costs $300–$800. Left until it backs up, it can mean sewage inside and an after-hours call-out.

How a plumber fixes it

  • Clears and jets the line from the gully or an inspection opening.
  • Runs a camera to find what caused it.
  • Checks the vent pipe if the line is clear.
  • If roots or cracks show up, gives you the footage and a written quote for a repair or relining.
  • At Block Drains, clearing a blocked sewer line is $549 fixed, with the camera inspection included and no call-out fee.

Gurgling and slow drains?

Clearing a sewer line before it backs up is a fixed price, any hour, with no call-out fee.

Questions

Is a gurgling toilet an emergency?
Not on its own, but book soon. It becomes urgent if water rises in the shower or floor waste when you flush, or the overflow gully outside spills.
Can a gurgling toilet fix itself?
Rarely. A partial blockage usually builds until it blocks fully.
