Pipe relining vs dig and replace: cost compared
Updated October 2026
For most Sydney homes with a cracked or root-damaged pipe under a driveway, slab or garden, relining costs less than digging once reinstatement is counted. Digging wins only when the pipe has fully collapsed or needs re-routing.
| Option | Typical Sydney cost | Block Drains |
|---|---|---|
| Pipe relining | $3,000–$12,000 | Fixed quote |
| Excavate and replace a drain | $10,000–$30,000 | Fixed quote |
When relining makes sense
- The pipe is cracked, has root-damaged joints or minor offsets, but a liner can still pass through.
- The run is under something expensive to dig up: concrete, pavers, tiles, a deck or a large tree.
- You want it done in a day with no trench in the yard.
When digging makes sense
- The pipe has collapsed so badly a liner can't pass.
- The fall (slope) is wrong and the pipe needs re-laying.
- The run is short, shallow and under lawn, so reinstatement is cheap.
The cost people forget
Excavation quotes often exclude reinstatement. Re-laying a concrete driveway or pavers can add more than the plumbing itself. Always ask for reinstatement to be itemised.
