Plumber hourly rates and call-out fees in Sydney (2026)
Updated October 2026
Sydney plumbers typically charge $80–$250 an hour in business hours, plus a call-out fee of $0–$200. After-hours and emergency rates run $120–$250 an hour. For drain jobs many plumbers quote a fixed price instead: clearing a blocked sink typically costs $150–$300 and a blocked sewer main $300–$800. Block Drains charges no call-out fee and the same fixed price at any hour.
| Option | Typical Sydney cost | Block Drains |
|---|---|---|
| Blocked sink or basin | $150–$300 | $199 |
| Blocked toilet | $180–$350 | $249 |
| Blocked sewer main (jet + camera) | $300–$800 | $549 |
What a call-out fee covers
- Travel and getting set up, and sometimes the first 15 to 30 minutes of labour. Ask exactly what it covers.
- Some plumbers waive it if you go ahead with the job; others charge it even if nothing is fixed.
- A '$0 call-out' advert can still come with a minimum charge or a separate service fee, so ask for the total.
Hourly or fixed price?
- Hourly suits work nobody can scope in advance, such as tracing a hidden leak.
- Fixed suits drain clearing, because the job and the equipment are well known.
- On an hourly quote, ask about billing increments (15 minutes or a full hour), when the clock starts, and whether equipment is charged on top.
- Many plumbers charge a minimum of one hour, or a higher rate for the first hour, then bill in 15 or 30 minute blocks after that. A 20-minute job can still cost a full hour.
Equipment charges on drain jobs
On a drain job, the hourly rate is often only part of the bill. A jetter, drain camera or root cutter can be charged separately. In Sydney a standalone CCTV inspection typically costs $200–$550 and hydro jetting $300–$650, so two quotes with the same hourly rate can end up hundreds of dollars apart.
After-hours rates
Weeknight and weekend work typically adds 20–50% to the price, and public holidays 50–100%. Some plumbers charge a higher hourly rate after hours, others a flat after-hours call-out on top of the normal rate. Our after-hours guide shows typical prices for each time of day.
